I am, with respect, not convinced. The term ‘Industrial Revolution’ is hard enough to define. It seems to me there is little point in describing its early stages with another equally vague term. Plus I suspect it has been developed only to support the Marxist argument that many convicts were innocent victims of industrialisation. So we risk replacing one vague and unsatisfactory term with another for the sake of propping up an inaccurate version of history.

Clearly something happened. England was transformed from an agrarian, medieval society to a modern, industrial one. We need to take a wider view. As Flinn notes “[t]he Industrial Revolution was not a particular kind of economic or social change; it was all kinds.” It left a society where more people had more autonomy and where a growing population combined with emerging industries to create unprecedented levels of sustained economic growth. These factors, taken together, were the real ‘revolution’.
